Ex-Cobbler of the week- 13/08/18

Every Monday for the 2018/19 season we will be remembering an ex-cobbler who has played for us and the opponents of that Saturdays game. We will be showing you their record and their story. We will be asking you for your memories of that player. We will also be asking you to nominate a player for Cobblers Past Ex-Cobbler of the Week.

Facts

Derrick Christie was turning out for Bletchley town reserves as a 15 year old and attracting the attention of Ipswich Town before the Cobblers stepped in

He signed apprentice forms with a clause in his contract that allowed him to continue business studies at college something quite uncommon in 1973.

He made his first team bow a couple of months short of his 17th. Birthday and signed a contract in March 1975.

There was much tooing and froing with the management at the time but Derrick won himself a place in the first team on a regular basis and formed a formidable partnership with George Reilly. His constant supply of crosses kept George’s goal scoring record high.

During the early part of the 1978=79 season he asked for a move. Cambridge came in with a £50,000 offer and he moved 40 miles East.

He adapted well to second division football and took up his partnership with George Reilly again when he was also transferred.

Sadly injury caught up with him and his last few seasons at the Abbey Stadium saw him in and out of the side.

He gave Reading, Cardiff and Peterborough a season each but never recaptured his top form.

He took employment as a legal executive whilst playing for Corby Town and Cambridge City and later worked for Peterborough land registry.
