Ex-Cobbler Of The Week - 01/10/18

Every Monday for the 2018/19 season we will be remembering an ex-cobbler who has played for us and the opponents of that Saturdays game. We will be showing you their record and their story. We will be asking you for your memories of that player. We will also be asking you to nominate a player for Cobblers Past Ex-Cobbler of the Week.

FACTS

Liverpool born Steve started his career with Portsmouth after his parents moved there when he was a child.

He struggled to hold down a first team place as he did with his next club Sunderland but blossomed with Newport despite the club losing league status.

Swindon paid £10,000 for his services and he signed in time to help them win promotion to division two but after three games he moved again, this time to Aldershot where he had a loan spell earlier in his career.

He joined them in an exchange deal with Bobby Barnes later to be a team mate at Northampton.

Graham Carr made several offers to hard up Aldershot but they always rejected it until it reached £45,000 and they could no longer keep Steve.

He became something of a utility player at the County ground taking up several positions. He would be best remembered for his goal that put Coventry out of the F.A. Cup.

Released in 1991 he still had plenty of football left and played for several non-league clubs and had spells in Germany and Hong Kong.

He later had coaching positions with Rushden and Bedford before making a playing comeback with Cogenhoe at 42.

In 2009 Steve was found in Paris working as head of global recruitment for Synovate a market research agency.
