Ian was with Notts. County when they fell from the first to the third division and it was then he became a prolific scorer netting 60 goals in his last three seasons at Meadow Lane. A move to Hull lasted less than a year before he was loaned out to Walsall. Released from his contract he went back north to Dunfermline before returning for a trial with Lincoln. When that came to nothing he agreed to play for Northampton in Roly Mills benefit match v Leicester. He was impressive and Phil Chard signed him on non-contract terms, which he was happy to do as his girlfriend lived in Kettering. He made history by being the first Northampton Town outfield player to be sent off on his debut (V Wrexham). Despite that he was a popular player with the supporters and they were somewhat disappointed when he up and left the club in mid season because he had not been offered a contract. After a short stint in Hong Kong he played in Scotland, Ireland and non-League football before taking up coaching with both Nottingham clubs at one stage. Ian managed Nottingham Forest (Caretaker) Notts County during 2009 until the new consortium took over and he was sacked in October. In March 2011 he became assistant manager of both Ipswich Town and Swindon Town leaving them in April 2011 together with manager Paul Hart when the club were relegated to League 2. He took up a coaching job with Oakham school Ian became Under 21 coach to Nottingham Forest in 28th. February 2013. Ian became coach to Sogndal, Norway in 2014
