Keeper comes in as Matt Ingram returns to QPR
Northampton Town have signed goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell from Rotherham United on a two and a half year contract. The 29 year old, 6ft 2in keeper began his career with Sheffield Wednesday in 2006 where he enjoyed a number of loan spells as he gained experience. He joined Chesterfield in 2012 and then moved to Walsall in 2013, where he won the club's player of the season award during their 2014/15 League 1 campaign. His form attracted the interest of Wigan Athletic, and he joined the Latics for the 2015/16 season, and after 12 appearances he joined Championship side Bristol City in the January 2016 transfer window, initially on loan before completing a permanent move for an undisclosed fee shortly afterwards. He made 32 appearances for Bristol City before joining Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee in January 2017, making 27 appearances for the Millers. "Richard is an excellent keeper who has extensive experience of playing in the Championship and League 1," said manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. "He has over 250 appearances under his belt and he is a good age for a keeper. "Richard has a great attitude, he will be one of the leaders and a good influence in the dressing room and I am sure he will do well for us." The arrival of O'Donnell means that Matt Ingram has returned to parent club Queen's Park Rangers. "Matt has done really well for us and we would like to thank him for his efforts," said Hasselbaink. "It is never ideal having a loan player as your goalkeeper as you always run the risk of losing a player who is on loan, so we wanted to investigate the possibility of making a permanent goalkeeper signing. We have been able to progress that and are delighted to be able to bring Richard in, and so the natural conclusion of that is that Matt will return to his parent club with our thanks and best wishes
