Preview- Newport

Newport County Association Football Club is a professional football club in Newport, South Wales, which plays in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. They reformed in 1989, as a continuation of the Newport County club which had been formed in 1912 and had been founder members of the Third Division in 1920.

Tuesday 27th November 2018- Newport County AFC 3 – 1 Northampton Town

Newport County AFC produced arguably their best home performance of the season in League Two as a mixture of offensive clinicality and defensive resilience rewarded them with a 3-1 victory over Northampton Town. Some of the attacking play from the Exiles was just remarkable and a delight to watch and they were ahead inside five minutes as Josh Sheehan calmly slotted away his first of the season from outside the area after a surging run from Dan Butler. Northampton hit back almost immediately and they found their equaliser with 11 minutes on the clock. Captain David Buchanan’s free-kick caused pinball in the area and Cobblers striker Andy Williams reacted quickest amidst the subsequent goalmouth scramble to fire past Joe Day. From there, it was completely one-way traffic from the Exiles and they quickly took the game from their visitors with two goals in and around the half hour mark.

Dan Butler was again involved in the second goal as his free-kick was headed back across goal by Mark O’Brien for Jamille Matt to prod home, whilst a lovely flowing move on 33 minutes concluded with Padraig Amond rifling a first-time shot into the roof of the net after good work from Tyreeq Bakinson. Into the second-half and County had to show their defensive unity to stand up to the test Northampton were providing – O’Brien made countless vital tackles and interceptions alongside Fraser Franks putting his body on the line to block a Daniel Powell shot.

Referee: Antony Coggins

Assistant Referee 1: Christopher Wade

Assistant Referee 2: Lisa Rashid

Fourth Official: Thomas Harty

Coggins is currently embarking on just his second season as a Football League referee having officiated his first match in League Two on the opening day of last season when Morecambe started the campaign off in perfect fashion having secured a 2-1 victory over Cheltenham Town.

He has refereed 30 games thus far this season, giving out 111 yellow cards and three red cards, including four on the opening day of the season as Scunthorpe United won away at Coventry City.

His record number of yellow cards for an individual fixture this season stands at eight, a figure he has brandished once – as Swindon Town played out a 0-0 draw with Mansfield Town on 20th October 2018 with Stags midfielder Will Atkinson also getting dismissed.

Every single fixture this season presided over by Coggins has seen at least one booking.

Those statistics follow on from refereeing a total of 34 matches across all competitions in his debut Football League campaign of 2017/18, a season in which Coggins gave out 87 yellow cards and six red cards throughout the entirety of the campaign.

“Newport on their day can compete above this level which they have shown in the FA Cup this season, they are a dangerous animal and they won’t have enjoyed the result they had on Saturday, Michael Flynn will be looking for a reaction and we will be mindful of that. We’ve got a very buoyant changing room at the moment but there are still elements of our game we can improve both individually and collectively. We are never going to be faultless but undoubtedly there is still more to come from this group. It was important we imposed ourselves on Exeter on Saturday and with every opposition we look at how we can nullify their threat and at the same time exploit any weaknesses. We always study our opponents and if I do make any changes to the team it will be for the right reasons and the players understand that."
