Ethan from Cobblers Past interviews Ex-Cobblers manager about his time at the Cobblers and his footballing career.
You spent 6 seasons at Tottenham making many appearances, what did you enjoy about playing for them?
I considered myself very fortunate to sign for the club I supported as a boy. Playing with so many great players in front of 40,000 every week was an honour.
After this you moved to Crystal Palace and spent 5 seasons there. Who was the craziest player you’ve worked with?
For me I’m very much a feelings person, I’m very loyal and I love camaraderie, I wasn’t ever the best player but I was the best team player. I would always compromise myself for the team so therefore my managers always liked me.
You finished your footballing career at Woking, many players now play for multiple clubs, what was the best thing about playing for only a few clubs for longer time?
I played for 6 managers at Spurs and I got on with them all bar one and the same at Palace. A team is where a group of individuals come together as one to fight for the same common goal, selflessness.
In 2017 you came to Northampton for the assistant manager job, What attracted you to Northampton?
It wasn’t about what attracted me to be honest, Jimmy Floyd called me out of the blue and asked if I’d be interested in joining him as his assistant. I wasn’t sure as I hadn’t worked with him but I’d watched many games at Sixfields and always found the crowd to be passionate and I love that.
In all the positions you’ve held in football is being a player your favourite?
My favourite position held I’d say there’s no feeling like playing but because I suffered terrible with injuries from the age of 24 I got into coaching early and I loved it. I had a great time as Assistant to Rodgers, Jokanovic and Flores but I truly loved my time managing the cobblers although short lived.
What are you doing now after leaving Northampton?
While I wait for the next opportunity in football I have a number of things I’m involved in, both in football and outside football. I have a kids Academy in St Albans called Volenti where we nurture young grass roots
Players and eventually try and feed back into the system. I’m involved in a restaurant and bar business in Marbella Spain called La Sala so I keep myself pretty busy.
Thank you for Dean’s time and support.
