BIG PREVIEW- Cambridge (A)

Here is all you need to know about Saturdays game VS Cambridge United

Cambridge United appointed Colin Calderwood as their new Head Coach just prior to Christmas and the Scot has made an instant impact.

In his first game in charge, Calderwood led the U’s to their first win in seven games while his side were unfortunate not to earn a result against the league leaders Lincoln City this past weekend - Cambridge led at half-time but surrendered their advantage during the second period.

Sitting one place and three points above the relegation zone, United will be looking to pick up enough points during the second-half of the season to stay clear of the red line.

One player who they will be relying on to help them achieve that feat is Jabo Ibehre, who has scored in each of his past two matches. Jeavani Brown and George Maris are their other goal threats.

“Cambridge are fighting for their lives, it won’t be an easy afternoon and anything we get on Saturday we will need to fight hard for,” he said.

“I’m not sure how they will set up and there are a lot of possible permutations but ultimately I think we have got a flexible squad that has a good understanding of different systems.

“Our players have had to adapt quickly to different formations and that shows the learning curve we’ve been on and are still on.

“Last Saturday against Carlisle was the continuation of us laying down the foundations and since I’ve been here I’ve not played the same team in consecutive games which shows that I am still learning about the group.

“I’m still pushing boundaries with certain players and I’m still seeing if they have the right credentials that I need to take them to the next level.

“Before the Carlisle game my message to the players was that everybody was talking about the players who have gone but I back the players in the changing room and I challenged them to go out and put on a performance that gets everybody talking about them.

“The players accepted and rose to the challenge and I think they all enjoyed the outcome.”

“Keith’s an experienced manager and a good manager and one who was probably a real close rival, especially in my first season at Northampton Town,” said the 53-year-old.

“I have a lot of respect for him and his teams have always been organised of course but they have that variation in their play which makes them interesting to play against.

“You can see that he is innovative in how he goes about his work.

“We’re looking forward to a test, and I’m sure it’ll be slightly different from the game we played last week (Cambridge won 1-0 at Notts County).

We have to be able to adjust and be ready and get ourselves set for what is a big, big match for us.”
